In a troubling development, an Egyptian family of six has been taken back into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) merely days after being released from a Texas detention facility. The family’s attorney, Eric Lee, reported that Hayam El Gamal and her five children were en route to Egypt on a private jet from Denver when they were detained due to allegations of violating a court order. The swift turn of events has ignited concerns over the separation of powers and the treatment of detainees within the immigration system.
Legal Turmoil and Family Detention
The El Gamal family’s recent ordeal has attracted significant attention not just locally but nationally. Following a prolonged ten-month stay at the controversial Dilley detention centre—dubbed one of the harshest facilities during Donald Trump’s administration—the family was initially released after a federal judge ruled in their favour. However, just days later, they found themselves back in ICE custody, raising questions about the legal processes governing their case.
Lee characterised the situation as a “brazen violation of separation of powers,” highlighting the gravity of the family’s legal battle. He and his team have since filed an emergency motion aiming to prevent the family’s deportation, a motion that was promptly granted by US District Judge Fred Biery. Nevertheless, details surrounding the alleged court order violation remain murky, with inquiries directed to the Department of Homeland Security yielding no immediate response.
Background of the Case
The family’s legal troubles began in June 2025 when Hayam El Gamal was arrested in connection to her then-husband, Mohamed Sabry Soliman. Soliman is accused of throwing molotov cocktails
