In a thrilling showdown on Sunday, the Toronto Raptors edged past the Cleveland Cavaliers with a narrow 93-89 victory, levelling their playoff series at two games apiece. The win came despite a challenging shooting night for the Raptors, who showcased resilience and determination, a quality that head coach Darko Rajakovic attributed to a Serbian term: “inat.”

Inat: More Than Just Grit

Rajakovic offered a brief lesson in Serbian after the game, highlighting how “inat,” pronounced ee-nut, embodies the spirit of his team. “It’s about proving everybody wrong, in spite of everything,” he explained during the post-match press conference. “All of our guys have a chip on their shoulder.” This mentality has permeated the Raptors’ roster, driving them to work tirelessly for the city of Toronto.

Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes led the charge for the Raptors, each contributing 23 points. Their performance proved pivotal as Toronto weathered a late surge from the Cavaliers, which had threatened to tip the balance in Cleveland’s favour. With Game 5 set for Wednesday in Ohio, and Game 6 returning to Scotiabank Arena on Friday, the Raptors have regained momentum in this best-of-seven series.

A Struggling Offence

Despite securing the win, the Raptors’ shooting performance was less than stellar, finishing with a dismal 31 of 97 (32 per cent) from the field and just 4 of 30 (13.3 per cent) from beyond the arc. Remarkably, this marked the lowest shooting percentage for a victorious team in a playoff game since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976.

Rajakovic remained optimistic, noting that the team’s grit and attention to detail were instrumental in the win. “It’s the grind and fight that we had, the attention to detail and rebounding the ball, and taking care of the ball, all the stuff that we preach night in and night out that came out in the game,” he stated. “We just never flinched. We continued guarding and guarding.”

Players Step Up Amid Challenges

Scottie Barnes, who added nine rebounds and six assists to his scoring tally, acknowledged Rajakovic’s role in shaping the Raptors’ identity. He maintained, however, that the focus remained on improving with each possession rather than dwelling on their struggles. “We’re just trying to go out there and win, take it one possession at a time,” said Barnes. “If they go on a run, how can we go on a run ourselves?”

Brandon Ingram had his best playoff showing thus far, contributing six rebounds alongside his scoring. Prior to this game, he struggled with his shooting, averaging just 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists in the series. “All my teammates have been there through ups and downs, telling me to keep shooting,” Ingram noted. “The information they give me is good information that propels me for the game.”

Young Talent Shines

R.J. Barrett, hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Raptors, while rookie centre Collin Murray-Boyles delivered a strong performance off the bench with a double-double, registering 15 points and 10 boards. Murray-Boyles emphasised the importance of rebounding as the series progresses, stating, “We need everybody so the things that I do we need it times 10.”

On the Cavaliers’ side, Donovan Mitchell led the charge with 20 points, 12 of which came in a late fourth-quarter rally, while James Harden contributed 19 points and eight assists. Despite the loss, the Cavaliers remain a formidable opponent. Ingram acknowledged the challenge ahead: “We’ve got to expect a fight. Back in their territory, their fans are going to be super loud, bringing the energy.”

Why it Matters

This victory significantly alters the dynamics of the series, propelling the Raptors into a position of newfound confidence and momentum. With both teams now at a level footing, the stage is set for an intense Game 5. Toronto’s ability to overcome adversity and maintain composure under pressure speaks volumes about their potential moving forward—an essential trait in the high-stakes environment of playoff basketball. As the series unfolds, fans can expect a thrilling contest, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the NBA playoffs.
