Montreal’s public transit authority, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), has announced the continuation of its “move along” order across the metro system until April 30, 2027. This initiative, designed to bolster safety for both passengers and staff, has reportedly led to improvements in the overall conditions within the metro facilities. The decision comes as the STM highlights the significant reduction in disruptive behaviour since the order’s inception.

Enhancing Passenger Safety

The STM’s “move along” policy empowers special constables to act against loitering and other non-transit activities within the metro network. During the winter months, this measure saw nearly 2,500 interventions per month. According to STM officials, the order aims to mitigate behaviours that could jeopardise the perception of safety among commuters and transit employees.

Recent data analysis suggests that the implementation of this order has had a positive impact. The transit agency noted an improvement in service reliability, particularly as incidents of intentional disruptions have declined. Reports indicate a 36 per cent reduction in the number of individuals needing to be escorted from stations at closing time compared to the previous year.

From November 2025 to March 2026, the STM documented a significant decrease in service interruptions lasting five minutes or more, attributed to disruptive conduct. The agency revealed a 22 per cent drop in such interruptions, coupled with a two per cent decrease in the number of interventions for incivility.

Interestingly, while the number of assaults on employees remained stable, the overall atmosphere within the metro has shown signs of improvement. Board chair Aref Salem remarked that fostering a stronger sense of security is essential for attracting more riders. He underscored that the “move along” order is merely one facet of a broader strategy to enhance safety across the transit network.

Continued Efforts for Improvement

The STM is committed to refining its approach to security, with Salem affirming that the agency will explore additional measures to further ensure the safety of both passengers and staff. This ongoing commitment reflects a responsive strategy aimed at addressing the evolving needs of the transit system.

The agency’s focus on enhancing public safety comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding the physical condition of metro infrastructure. As many stations are reported to be in need of significant repairs, the STM’s safety initiatives are seen as a vital step in maintaining public confidence in the transit system.

Why it Matters

The decision to extend the “move along” order is not just about enforcing rules; it is a testament to the STM’s dedication to creating a safer, more welcoming environment for all users of the metro. As Montreal continues to navigate the challenges of urban transit, ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers will be crucial for the system’s long-term viability. Enhanced safety measures can encourage greater public use of public transport, which in turn can contribute to reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact in the city.
