The Toronto Raptors are gearing up for a pivotal Game 5 in their playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, with RJ Barrett emphasising the importance of starting strong. After a rollercoaster opening to the best-of-seven series—Cleveland initially taking a 2-0 lead followed by two consecutive wins for Toronto—the Raptors know that maintaining control early in the game is essential if they want to advance.

A Call for Stronger Starts

Barrett, speaking at Cleveland’s Rocket Arena, acknowledged that falling behind by significant margins, such as eight to ten points, has been an issue for the Raptors, especially during their away games. “Those games at home, of course, it’s easier with the crowd to help propel us to get back in the game,” Barrett remarked. “But on the road, we were in that position a bunch of times. With their crowd, it could go the other way.”

Toronto’s ability to bounce back at Scotiabank Arena was impressive, but Barrett stressed the need to avoid such scenarios altogether. The Raptors must adopt a proactive approach from the outset to make their playoff aspirations a reality.

Defensive Adjustments Key to Success

In their last two victories, Toronto managed to shift the momentum of the series by stifling Cleveland’s offensive rhythm. The Raptors focused on isolating all-star guards Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, forcing them into half-court situations. Barrett highlighted the importance of limiting Cleveland’s offensive rebounds, particularly from key frontcourt players Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. “I think limiting offensive rebounds would be huge,” he explained. “We played good defence, so limiting them to one shot as much as possible will help.”

With both teams having made significant adjustments, Barrett believes it now comes down to determination and teamwork. “At this point, everybody’s made adjustments. It’s just about who’s willing to go out there and fight together.”

Rising Star’s Contribution

Ja’Kobe Walter, a second-year guard making his playoff debut, has been integral in guarding Mitchell. Anticipating another hard-fought battle, Walter likened Game 5 to the gritty, low-scoring affair witnessed in Toronto’s recent 89-83 victory. “I think it’s really going to be a battle,” he stated, reflecting the tense atmosphere that both teams will bring to the court.

Mitchell echoed this sentiment, stating before the Raptors’ morning shootaround that both teams will need to match each other’s intensity from the very start. “They’re going to come out with the mentality that they’ve got to match our physicality, and we’re going to come with the mentality that we’ve got to punch them first in the mouth all 48 minutes,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a battle, a lot of execution, a lot of focus.”

Walter, recovering from illness earlier in the series, is now back in form and ready to contribute significantly in this critical match.

Why It Matters

The outcome of Game 5 could define the trajectory of the Raptors’ playoff journey. Their ability to secure an early lead and maintain it will be crucial not only for their momentum but also for the psychological edge over the Cavaliers. A win in Cleveland would place Toronto in a commanding position as they look to advance deeper into the playoffs, making this game a must-watch for any basketball fan. With both teams pushing their limits, the stakes have never been higher, and the excitement is palpable.
