Roger Sweet, the creative force who designed the iconic He-Man action figure, has died at the age of 91. His contributions to the Masters of the Universe franchise not only shaped the toy industry but also defined a cultural phenomenon that captured the imaginations of children during the 1980s.

A Legacy of Power and Imagination

Sweet’s death was confirmed by Mattel in a statement that lauded his significant role in the creation of He-Man and other beloved characters. The cause of death and location were not disclosed. “Roger played a pivotal role in the early development of Masters of the Universe, helping introduce iconic characters like He-Man and Skeletor to the world and inspiring generations of fans to find their inner power,” the statement read. “His legacy endures in the characters he helped bring to life and the imaginations he ignited.”

He-Man’s journey began with a missed opportunity for Mattel. Before the release of “Star Wars” in 1977, George Lucas approached Mattel with a proposal for a toy line, but they opted out. Kenner, however, seized the chance and became a toy industry giant. This setback pushed Mattel to seek innovative solutions, leading them to Sweet, who had joined the company in 1972.

The Birth of an Icon

In the wake of Mattel’s decision, Sweet was tasked with creating a new action figure that would resonate with young boys. He recalled in a 2019 interview, “Mattel market research found the three most popular things were barbarian fantasy, futuristic military as in ‘Star Wars’ and current military, as in G.I. Joe.” He set to work, crafting a nine-and-a-half-inch figure that would become He-Man.

By enhancing the figure’s shoulders and muscular build, he created an emblematic representation of masculinity. He-Man, with his distinctive battle attire and weaponry, emerged as a quintessential hero during a time when action stars like Stallone and Schwarzenegger reigned supreme. Notably, the character’s success stood in stark contrast to Sweet’s own self-description as a “puny guy.”

When He-Man debuted in 1982, it marked the beginning of a franchise that would include other iconic figures like Skeletor and She-Ra, the latter also conceived by Sweet. The subsequent animated series, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” which aired from 1983 to 1985, further solidified the toy line’s place in pop culture. With He-Man’s famous catchphrase, “I have the power!” echoing in playgrounds nationwide, the franchise quickly became a household name.

Commercial Triumph and Decline

The initial response to the Masters of the Universe toy line was overwhelming, with over 125 million units sold within the first three years. This success was crucial for Mattel, especially as competition intensified from brands like Transformers and Voltron. However, the 1987 live-action film featuring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man did not fare well, leading to a downturn in the franchise’s popularity as the 1980s came to a close.

Born on April 4, 1935, in Ohio, Sweet studied at the Institute of Design in Chicago before embarking on his career at Mattel. After leaving the company in 1991, he largely retreated from the public eye, appearing occasionally at conventions. Despite his significant contributions to the franchise, Sweet expressed dissatisfaction over his financial rewards, noting that while he received bonuses early on, he felt the company profited disproportionately from his designs.

In 2005, Sweet published a memoir titled “Mastering the Universe: He-Man and the Rise and Fall of a Billion-Dollar Idea,” where he sought to clarify his role in the franchise’s creation. “I wanted to make it extremely clear who did what,” he stated, emphasizing his meticulous documentation of the creative process.

A Resurgence of Nostalgia

In recent years, the Masters of the Universe franchise has experienced a resurgence. The animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” released on Netflix in 2021, reignited interest, followed by the toys being inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2022. Anticipation builds for a new live-action film, set to premiere in June, featuring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, alongside Jared Leto and Idris Elba.

Despite his complicated relationship with Mattel in his later years, Sweet maintained a fondness for the characters he had brought to life. His wedding cake featured He-Man and She-Ra figurines, symbolizing his lifelong connection to the franchise. “I always wanted to be a He-Man and never could,” he reflected in a 2019 interview. “I knew almost every guy in the world would love to be a He-Man.”

Why it Matters

Roger Sweet’s passing marks the end of an era for a character that has transcended generations, embodying ideals of strength and heroism. The He-Man franchise not only revolutionised the toy industry but also influenced media and culture, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of millions. As new adaptations emerge, Sweet’s legacy will continue to inspire creativity and imagination, ensuring that the power of He-Man endures for future generations.
