In a harrowing revelation, the FBI has unveiled details regarding the motivations behind the tragic shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured in December. Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the perpetrator, reportedly harboured deep-seated grievances stemming from personal failures, which he sought to avenge through his violent actions. This announcement comes more than four months after the incident that shook the Ivy League campus and the wider community.
The Shooter’s Background
Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old from Portugal, had been planning the attack for over a year. Federal authorities revealed that his violent intentions began to take shape in 2022, as he grappled with a series of personal setbacks. Neves Valente was also implicated in the shooting death of Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, just days before the Brown University attack. Following a brief manhunt, he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on 18 December at a storage facility in New Hampshire.
According to the FBI, Neves Valente’s grievances were compounded by a life marked by isolation. He lacked a support system of family or friends who might have noticed any warning signs. The investigation concluded that he acted independently, targeting individuals and institutions he perceived as embodiments of his failures. Both Brown University and Lou
