Polanski expressed regret on Friday for sharing a tweet that levelled serious allegations against police officers involved in the arrest of a suspect in connection with the stabbing of two Jewish men. The post claimed that officers had “repeatedly and violently kicked a mentally ill man in the head” after he had been incapacitated by a Taser. Following backlash, including criticism from Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, Polanski clarified that he believed social media was not the right platform for such discussions.
“I was very concerned by what I saw and I remain concerned,” he stated during an interview on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, reiterating his worries regarding the police’s approach. His comments have sparked further debate, with Communities Secretary Steve Reed labelling Polanski’s questioning of the police’s actions as “shameful.”
