Recent surges in utility rates, exacerbated by demand from data centres and geopolitical tensions, have prompted calls for more sustainable energy alternatives. The Lima project is spearheaded by D3Energy, a Florida-based company that has emerged as a leader in floating solar technology, boasting over 25 projects across the United States. Stetson Tchividjian, managing director of D3Energy, highlights the advantages of floating solar systems: “A typical one megawatt floating solar system can fit on roughly two acres of water, compared to approximately five acres of land for a comparable ground-mounted system.” This innovative approach allows for energy generation without compromising valuable agricultural land.

Despite its reputation for overcast skies, Ohio receives more sunlight than some states traditionally associated with solar energy, such as Oregon. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Ohio ranks 12th in the nation for solar capacity, with neighbouring states Indiana and Illinois also making strides in renewable energy production.

Challenges and Local Sentiments

However, the path to widespread solar adoption in rural America is fraught with challenges. Concerns over land use and the visual impact of large solar arrays have led to resistance among some community members. Farmers like Doug Goyings, who operate large agricultural operations, express frustration with the high transmission and distribution fees associated with solar energy, despite offsetting much of their electric bills through self-generated power.

Additionally, misinformation campaigns funded by fossil fuel interests have resulted in local bans on large-scale solar installations on agricultural land. As a result, the industry faces a dual battle: not only must it demonstrate the viability of renewable technology, but it must also work to shift public perception and alleviate fears about the impacts of solar farms.

As the Lima floating solar project nears completion, it is projected to save the city and its taxpayers approximately $10 million over its lifespan. Beyond economic benefits, the solar arrays will also help reduce evaporation rates and limit algae growth in the reservoir by providing a protective barrier against sunlight.

“People like the idea that it’s not taking up any land and of us trying to save money,” Weekley states, reflecting a growing acceptance of solar technologies in the region.
