The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it is investigating a potential case of human-to-human transmission of hantavirus aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, where three passengers have tragically lost their lives. This alarming development comes as the ship remains anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, with 149 individuals from 23 countries currently under strict health precautions.
Details of the Outbreak
Initially, hantavirus is primarily transmitted through contact with rodents, but the WHO has indicated that close quarters among passengers may have facilitated an unusual form of transmission in this instance. Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, a leading official at the WHO, noted that couples sharing cabins on board could represent a higher risk for the spread of the virus.
The first passenger to fall ill is believed to have contracted the virus prior to boarding the vessel. So far, health officials have identified seven cases of hantavirus, including two confirmed infections: one involving a 69-year-old British national who has since been evacuated to South Africa for medical treatment, and another confirmed case involving a Dutch woman who later succumbed to the virus. The deceased woman’s husband, alongside another passenger—a German national who died on 2 May—has not been confirmed as having the virus.
In a heartbreaking statement, the family of the Dutch couple expressed their grief, stating, “The beautiful journey they experienced together was abruptly and permanently cut short. We are still unable to comprehend that we have lost them. We wish to bring them home and commemorate them in peace and privacy.”
Ongoing Investigations and Health Measures
As investigations continue, testing is being conducted on other passengers and crew members exhibiting symptoms. The MV Hondius set sail from Argentina nearly a month ago, and the ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed that it has been moored near Cape Verde since Monday.
Dr Van Kerkhove highlighted that the initial strain of the virus identified appears to be the Andes strain, common in South America, where the journey began. Interestingly, she noted that there were no reports of rodents on board, which raises questions about how this transmission may have occurred. Currently, disinfection protocols are in effect, and those caring for symptomatic individuals are equipped with full personal protective gear.
“Our working hypothesis is that there are probably several different types of transmission at play,” Dr Van Kerkhove explained. She pointed out that the cruise had visited various islands, some of which are known to have rodent populations, which typically transmit the virus through their droppings, saliva, or urine.
Future Health Precautions
The focus remains on the health of two crew members, of Dutch and British nationality, who are exhibiting respiratory symptoms. Plans are in place for their medical evacuation to the Netherlands, along with another individual linked to the deceased German national.
Spain has granted permission for the MV Hondius to dock in the Canary Islands, where authorities will conduct a risk assessment and further medical monitoring. However, the Spanish health ministry has tempered speculation about allowing the ship to dock, stating that decisions will depend on the epidemiological data collected as the ship approaches.
Despite the uncertainty, one passenger described the atmosphere on board as relatively positive, saying, “Hopefully the other patients on board will be tested soon and then we’ll know what’s going on.” Travel vlogger Jake Rosmarin echoed this sentiment, expressing a desire for clarity and safety amidst the ongoing health crisis.
