A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has led to a critical situation aboard the luxury cruise ship, where medical professionals are urgently addressing the health crisis. With three confirmed fatalities, including two Dutch nationals and a German, and multiple individuals affected, the World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating the alarming circumstances surrounding this rare disease.

Medical Emergency Aboard the MV Hondius

A British crew member is in dire need of medical assistance, and another UK passenger remains in a critical but stable condition following the suspected outbreak. The MV Hondius, which set sail from Argentina in March with 149 passengers from 23 different countries, is currently stranded off the coast of Cape Verde as health authorities implement isolation protocols onboard.

As of 4 May 2026, the WHO reported a total of seven cases of hantavirus, including two confirmed and five suspected instances. The agency linked the outbreak to the tragic deaths of three individuals, one of whom collapsed and later died in South Africa while attempting to return to the Netherlands.

Details of the Outbreak

The cruise operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed the timeline of events leading to the outbreak. The first passenger fatality occurred on 11 April, but the cause was initially undetermined. Following this, a second Dutch national fell ill and subsequently passed away after being evacuated to South Africa.

On 27 April, a British national became seriously ill and remains in intensive care in Johannesburg. The WHO has confirmed a variant of hantavirus in this patient. Another casualty, a German tourist, died on 2 May, heightening concerns among passengers and their families.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodent excretions and can lead to severe respiratory issues. While there are no confirmed cases among the crew at this time, the situation remains fluid as health officials investigate potential sources of the virus on board.

Cruise Operator’s Response and Passenger Concerns

Oceanwide Expeditions has assured passengers of strict health measures, including isolation protocols and continuous medical monitoring. However, the ship’s request to dock in Cape Verde was denied by local health authorities, who are prioritising national public health safety. The vessel is now considering alternative docking options in the Canary Islands, where further medical evaluations could be conducted.

A US travel blogger on the ship, Jake Rosmarin, expressed the emotional toll of the situation, stating, “We’re not just headlines: we are people. There’s a lot of uncertainty, and that’s the hardest part.” This sentiment reflects the anxiety and distress felt by those stranded at sea amid a health crisis.

Investigating the Source of Infection

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they work to ascertain the source of the hantavirus infection. Speculation includes the possibility of rodent transmission on the ship or potential exposure during a previous port of call in South America. The Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment is collaborating with local health officials to conduct thorough investigations.

The WHO has reassured the public that the risk to wider communities remains low, with no immediate need for panic or travel restrictions. Contact tracing is underway in South Africa to assess any potential exposure among those who interacted with the infected passengers.

Why it Matters

This outbreak underscores the vulnerabilities associated with international travel, particularly on cruises where passengers from diverse backgrounds gather in close quarters. The situation calls for heightened health protocols and thorough investigations to prevent future incidents. As the world continues to grapple with infectious diseases, the response to this crisis could set important precedents for public health measures in the travel industry.
