The London-based mezzo-soprano, who concealed her hearing impairment for over 30 years, now embodies hope for many others facing similar challenges, as a new study into dual cochlear implants for adults gains momentum.
A Life in Silence
For more than three decades, Roebuck navigated her career in opera while grappling with a debilitating hearing loss caused by a hereditary condition known as sensorineural hearing loss, which affects about 70% of genetic deafness cases. Despite performing at prestigious venues, including the Royal Opera House, she faced the isolating effects of her condition, often struggling to follow conversations and experiencing profound fatigue from the concentration required to engage with the world around her.
In 2019, Roebuck underwent surgery on her left ear, receiving a single cochlear implant through the NHS. However, she felt compelled to take matters into her own hands and subsequently opted to privately fund the implantation of her right ear, a decision she describes as “the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
Life-Changing Surgery
Roebuck’s experience with bilateral cochlear implants has been nothing short of transformative. “Having two implants is light years away from just one,” she remarked. The NHS currently adheres to guidelines that typically permit only one cochlear implant for most adults, a decision based on financial assessments and lack of extensive evidence regarding the effectiveness of dual implants. However, recent initiatives backed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and led by Addenbrooke’s hospital and the University of Cambridge aim to investigate the benefits of providing two implants to adults who have lost their hearing later in life.
The Groundbreaking Study
The upcoming trial will involve over 250 participants across 14 hospitals, who will either receive one or two cochlear implants. This research seeks to fill the gap in knowledge about the potential advantages of bilateral cochlear implants for adults, which could mirror the benefits seen in children who routinely receive two implants.
Matthew Smith, an ear, nose and throat surgeon involved in the study, expressed optimism about the findings. “We know from giving bilateral implants to children that it can have a transformative effect on their quality of life and interactions with other people,” he said.
