In a remarkable turn of events, Bedriya Adem, a 35-year-old woman from Ethiopia’s Harari Regional State, has welcomed quintuplets after a prolonged 12-year struggle with infertility. The birth, which occurred at the Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital, has filled her and her husband with immense joy, as they embrace their new lives as parents to four boys and one girl, affectionately referred to as their “five blessings.”
A Journey of Hope and Resilience
Bedriya’s journey to motherhood has not been easy. For years, she endured emotional turmoil and societal pressure surrounding her inability to conceive. “I cannot express my happiness in words,” she shared, reflecting on the pain and depression that enveloped her during her long wait for a child. In a rare occurrence, Bedriya conceived naturally without the use of assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilisation (IVF), which is not available at the hospital. The likelihood of conceiving quintuplets naturally is estimated to be one in 55 million, highlighting the extraordinary nature of this event. Dr. Abdulahi mentioned that Bedriya received comprehensive medical care throughout her pregnancy, which included regular monitoring and support. Initially, she was informed that she was expecting four babies, only to be surprised by the arrival of a fifth during delivery, performed via Caesarean section on Tuesday evening.
“I prayed for just one child, and Allah has blessed me beyond measure,” Bedriya recounted, her voice filled with emotion. She noted that her husband had a child from a previous relationship, which added to her feelings of inadequacy in the eyes of their community. “I spent 12 years in pain, hiding myself, and praying constantly for children—at last, Allah heard me.”
