Metro Vancouver has been penalised nearly £170,000 by WorkSafeBC for serious safety violations linked to a near-fatal incident that occurred during a valve replacement project in New Westminster earlier this year. Bill Tielman, a representative from the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees Union, expressed his concerns about the incident, stating, “This poor worker was crushed by a large piece of machinery coming loose and landing on or flying at him, and only through good luck that he survived, to be honest. Kiel Giddens, the BC Conservative Labour critic, commented on the necessity of proper training and oversight when working in confined spaces. “When we’re talking about confined spaces, you need proper training and standard operating procedures and you absolutely need supervisory oversight and that’s what was missing here,” he said.
