In a stunning showcase of urban life, William Shum has immortalised the vibrant character of Hong Kong through his award-winning photograph, featuring one of the city’s famous red taxis against the backdrop of Yau Ma Tei. The image, which clinched accolades at the 2025 Mobile Photography Awards, encapsulates the essence of a district rich in history and local culture.
A Glimpse into Yau Ma Tei
Shum describes Yau Ma Tei as “one of the region’s older and most characterful districts,” a place where the pulse of authentic city life beats strongest. The area is an eclectic mix of aged residential buildings, bustling street-level shops, and the constant flow of traffic—a true reflection of Hong Kong’s dynamic urban landscape.
“I’m always drawn to this area because it feels authentic and full of local life,” he explains. His love for the district shines through in his work, as he captures not just images but also the spirit of a community that thrives amidst the towering skyscrapers.
The Art of Timing and Composition
The brilliance of Shum’s photograph lies in the striking contrast between the iconic red taxi and the densely packed architecture of the background. “The building is full of repeating windows and air-conditioning units, which creates a dense and layered background, while in front the taxi appears in a very simple and clean shape,” he remarks. This juxtaposition highlights both the chaotic energy of the city and the serene presence of its everyday elements.
To achieve the perfect shot, Shum employed the burst mode feature of his iPhone 13 Pro Max, capturing multiple frames in quick succession. He patiently waited for half an hour, observing the rhythm of the street to ensure the taxi would be centrally positioned within the frame. “I wanted it to appear centrally in the frame so that it would sit in balance with the massive building; I knew it would only work in the exact right position,” he recalls. His meticulous attention to detail demonstrates a deep understanding of photographic composition and the importance of timing.
The Recognition of Mobile Photography
Shum’s success in the Mobile Photography Awards underscores the growing recognition of mobile photography as a legitimate and powerful medium. With the advent of advanced smartphone technology, artists like Shum are redefining the boundaries of photography, proving that exceptional images can be captured without professional-grade equipment.
His victory is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the creative possibilities that mobile devices offer. Shum’s work encourages others to explore their surroundings, reminding us that beauty can be found in the most unassuming corners of our cities.
Why it Matters
Shum’s photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the stories that urban spaces tell, encapsulating the vibrancy and complexity of Hong Kong life. In an age dominated by digital images, his work highlights the significance of patience, perspective, and the art of observation. By capturing the essence of Yau Ma Tei, Shum invites us to see our environments through a fresh lens, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the culture and communities that define our cities. In doing so, he not only celebrates Hong Kong but also inspires a global audience to engage with their own local narratives.
