South Bow Corp. Eyes Expansion Amid Rising Oil Demand and New Projects

In response to increasing demand for oil exports, South Bow Corp. has announced that customers are eager to utilise more capacity on the southern segment of its Keystone pipeline network. Richard Prior, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, attributed this surge in interest to recent geopolitical events that have heightened the need for oil, particularly through the U.S. Gulf Coast.

An Overview of South Bow’s Pipeline Operations

Operating an extensive 4,900 kilometres of pipelines from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, South Bow is at the forefront of Canada’s energy infrastructure. The Keystone system, which connects eastern Alberta to refineries in the Midwest and along the Texas coast, has seen significant activity. In the first quarter of 2026, the Keystone system recorded an average throughput of 616,000 barrels per day, with the Gulf Coast segment averaging 709,000 barrels daily.

While the Gulf Coast leg has the capability to transport over 800,000 barrels per day, Prior cautioned that expanding capacity beyond this level presents challenges.

New Opportunities: The Prairie Connector Project

In addition to addressing immediate demand, South Bow is currently evaluating bids for a new initiative named the Prairie Connector. This project aims to transport oilsands crude to the Canada-U.S. border, facilitating access to various U.S. destinations. Notably, the Prairie Connector could potentially repurpose dormant pipelines originally intended for the Keystone XL expansion, a project that faced significant environmental and political hurdles prior to its cancellation.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump has recently issued a permit for a project by Bridger Pipeline LLC that would link Wyoming to the Canadian border, which could intersect with the Prairie Connector.

“We view this as a pivotal moment in the permitting process for cross-border energy infrastructure, which has naturally drawn considerable attention,” remarked South Bow CEO Bevin Wirzba.

Assessing Risks and Partnerships

Wirzba emphasised the importance of careful planning as the company navigates potential partnerships for the Prairie Connector. “We are still in the process of finalising a few elements,” he stated, noting the need to establish a clear contracting strategy, supply chain logistics, and accurate cost estimates before making any investment decisions.

Moreover, he highlighted the necessity of addressing “last-mile risks” that could arise during project execution. “We’re observing a strong alignment in the regulatory frameworks of both Canada and the United States, but it’s crucial that we do not expose our shareholders to risks they are unprepared for,” Wirzba added.

In the latest financial update, South Bow reported a net income of US$77 million for the first quarter, down from US$88 million a year earlier. The company also noted a slight decrease in revenue, which fell to US$491 million from US$498 million.

Future Prospects in the Energy Sector

As the energy landscape evolves, South Bow Corp. remains poised to adapt to new demands while navigating the complexities of environmental sustainability. The proposed Prairie Connector could play a significant role in reshaping cross-border oil transport, especially as the industry grapples with increasing scrutiny over its environmental impact and regulatory compliance.

Why it Matters

The developments at South Bow Corp. underscore the dynamic nature of the energy sector, particularly in the context of rising global demand and geopolitical influences. As Canada seeks to balance its resource extraction with environmental responsibilities, projects like the Prairie Connector could not only enhance oil export capabilities but also serve as a litmus test for how the industry can evolve in the face of environmental challenges. The decisions made here will resonate far beyond the immediate financial implications, shaping the future of Canadian energy and its role in the broader North American market.
