As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Metro Vancouver airports are bracing for an influx of high-profile arrivals, including world leaders and celebrities, arriving in their private jets. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is expecting an increase in private flights, although officials anticipate it will not rival the record-setting numbers seen during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Anticipated Spike in Private Flights
Andy Margolis, the chief operations officer at YVR, has noted that the airport typically accommodates between 15 to 25 private jets daily. However, he predicts that the World Cup will see fewer private arrivals compared to the 181 jets that landed on a single day during the pop star’s concert series in December 2024. “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I don’t foresee the numbers peaking before or after matches to reach Taylor Swift’s levels. So, we are well-prepared to manage the expected traffic,” Margolis stated.
Vancouver is set to host seven matches during the tournament in June and July, attracting significant attention from international visitors.
Booking Procedures and Airport Readiness
Private jets planning to land at YVR must reserve their landing slots in advance and coordinate with one of three specialised companies operating at the airport, which offer premium services such as luxury hangars and pilot lounges. Margolis acknowledged that accurately predicting the number of private flights for the World Cup is challenging, as most operators tend to finalise their bookings shortly before their arrival.
In contrast, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager of Alpha Aviation, which oversees Boundary Bay, mentioned that they are also preparing for an uptick in private jets during the tournament. The airport is considering additional parking options and possibly helicopter transfers to help guests avoid the lengthy journey to BC Place stadium.
“We have received numerous enquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our pricing, fuel availability, and customs clearance procedures,” Rieberger explained. “However, we expect solid bookings to come in just 24 to 48 hours before the event.”
Air Traffic Management Strategies
Nav Canada, the agency responsible for the country’s air traffic control, has been preparing for the World Cup’s anticipated demand for over a year. Their strategy includes leveraging insights gained from previous major events, such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the annual Canadian Grand Prix in Montréal. “Nav Canada has a strong history of managing air traffic efficiently during significant international events,” the agency noted, highlighting their commitment to maintaining safety and efficiency throughout the tournament.
Margolis indicated that YVR has been formulating plans for the World Cup since 2022, ensuring a seamless experience for both private and commercial air traffic.
Commercial Flights See Increased Demand
While the number of private jets may not reach the extraordinary levels seen during special events like the Eras Tour, Margolis assured that commercial flight operations at YVR will remain stable. However, he expects a significant rise in passenger numbers, with estimates suggesting a five to ten per cent increase on any given day during the World Cup.
During the summer, YVR typically accommodates around 80,000 passengers daily. “The passenger influx will primarily be due to FIFA-related travel, rather than other purposes,” he noted, emphasising that the airport is prepared to handle the increased volume of travellers.
