However, with the stadium gearing up to host matches for the World Cup, the team has transitioned into a rigorous away schedule. Defender Tristan Blackmon expressed the silver lining of this scenario, highlighting the camaraderie that develops during travel. “You can just have bonding time together,” he noted. “It’s fun to go into other stadiums and try to take points away from the home team.”
Nonetheless, the shift from familiar surroundings to the unpredictability of travel can be jarring for players. Striker Brian White reflected on the adjustment required, stating, “Having that long stretch at home and going on the road is a little bit weird. You get stuck in your home game routine, so then you have to figure out what your away routine is again.”
Strong Start to the Season
Currently, the Whitecaps are performing remarkably well, holding second place in the MLS standings with an impressive record of 8 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses. Their recent outings include two draws on the road, against the L.A. Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes, contributing to their away record of 1 win, 0 draws, and 2 losses.
As B.C. Place undergoes renovations for the World Cup, including the installation of a grass pitch, head coach Jesper Sorensen is keen to maximise the time spent on the road. “It makes it easier for us as a coaching staff to work with players,” he explained. “We can call them in for small meetings and show them stuff and videos.” This opportunity to connect off the pitch is crucial, especially as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
Upcoming Challenges
The road trip begins in earnest on Wednesday as the Whitecaps prepare to face FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas. Following that, they will take on the Houston Dynamo before returning to Vancouver for recovery and training. The squad will complete this phase of the season with a match against San Diego FC on May 23.
Once the MLS resumes in mid-July, the Whitecaps will continue their travels, visiting teams such as the Chicago Fire, Cincinnati FC, and Minnesota United before finally returning to B.C. Place to host Los Angeles FC on August 1. The extended time together on the road is reminiscent of their pre-season camps in Marbella, Spain, where players bond and integrate without the distractions of home. White articulated the importance of this camaraderie, saying, “It’s important to build that chemistry in preseason, and then that leads into the regular season as well.”
