As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Metro Vancouver’s airports are preparing for a wave of arrivals, including international dignitaries, celebrities, and affluent travellers arriving in private jets. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates a surge in air traffic, though it does not expect the numbers to rival the record-breaking influx seen during Taylor Swift’s concert tour.
Anticipated Spike in Air Traffic
Andy Margolis, YVR’s Chief Operations Officer, has indicated that the airport typically accommodates between 15 and 25 private jets daily. However, he does not foresee the same level of activity as was recorded during Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024, when a staggering 181 private aircraft landed in a single day. “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I do not expect the numbers surrounding the match days to reach anything close to what we saw with Taylor Swift. We’re confident in our capacity to manage this increase,” Margolis remarked.
Vancouver is set to host seven matches from June to July, and private jets arriving at YVR must pre-book their landing slots, coordinating with one of three designated companies that offer luxury amenities, including upscale hangars and pilot lounges.
Uncertainty in Bookings
Margolis acknowledged the challenge in estimating the number of private flights, as many operators tend to secure their landing times closer to their expected arrival. Meanwhile, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, also expects a rise in private jet landings, functioning on a first-come, first-served basis without the need for advance booking.
Julia Rieberger, administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, which operates at Boundary Bay, confirmed that they are actively planning for this influx. “We are creating contingency plans for additional parking and exploring options for helicopter transfers to Vancouver to help visitors avoid the 30-kilometre journey to BC Place stadium,” she noted. Rieberger added that they have received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators, while substantial bookings are likely to materialise only within 24 to 48 hours of arrival.
Strategic Preparations by Nav Canada
Nav Canada, responsible for air traffic management across the country, has been diligently preparing for the increased demand associated with the World Cup, drawing on experience from previous high-profile events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and the G7 Summit in Charlevoix. Their planning involves coordinating with airlines, airport authorities, and neighbouring airports to ensure smooth operations during peak periods.
“The planning for this summer is based on the demand profiles we’ve established over the past year, which includes peak demand seasons and significant international events hosted in Canada,” a Nav Canada representative stated. Their goal is to ensure the safety and efficiency of air traffic during this busy period.
Commercial Flights Remain Steady
For soccer fans who are not part of the private jet demographic, YVR is not expecting any changes to its commercial flight schedules. However, Margolis predicts that planes will be operating at full capacity, with expected passenger numbers rising by five to ten per cent during the tournament. “Throughout the summer, we typically see around 80,000 passengers daily, and we anticipate a slight increase with many travellers arriving for FIFA-related activities,” he explained.
