A recent study has unveiled compelling evidence that consuming a modest amount of coffee alongside a diet rich in fruit could significantly reduce the risk of unhealthy cellular ageing. Conducted by scientists at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, the study involved over 1,700 adults and tracked their dietary habits and telomere lengths over several years. Shorter telomeres are associated with a higher likelihood of age-related diseases, including cardiovascular issues and some cancers.
The findings were presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul, revealing that individuals who consumed the highest amounts of polyphenols—antioxidant-rich compounds found in fruits, coffee, and other plant-based foods—exhibited a staggering 52% reduction in the risk of having short telomeres compared to their peers with lower polyphenol intake.

Moderate coffee consumption, defined as one cup per day, was shown to correlate with a 26% lower risk of short telomeres compared to non-coffee drinkers. Furthermore, participants who consumed four to five servings of fruit daily were found to have a 29% reduced risk of shorter telomeres. While the study did not find a similar effect from other polyphenol sources such as olive oil, red wine, or vegetables, the overall message was clear: a diet abundant in polyphenols appears to support healthier cellular ageing.

Lead author Isabella Kury Guzmán emphasised the importance of cumulative dietary choices, stating, “Our findings point to a broader message: a diet rich in polyphenols, including foods like fruits and coffee, may be one piece of the puzzle in supporting healthier cellular ageing. This is not about one ‘anti-ageing’ food, but about the cumulative effect of everyday dietary choices over time.”

Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, a professor of human nutrition at King’s College London, supported the study’s conclusions, noting that polyphenols have been linked to reduced risks of various age-related conditions. “Clinical studies show that consumption of these compounds can lower blood pressure and support blood vessel and brain function as we age. This study adds to growing evidence that diets rich in polyphenols may support healthier ageing,” she remarked.
However, Gunter Kuhnle, a professor of nutrition at the University of Reading, urged caution in interpreting these results. He noted that accurately measuring polyphenol intake is challenging, and while it is widely accepted that diets high in fruits and vegetables confer health benefits, it remains difficult to isolate the effects of polyphenols from the overall advantages of a healthy diet.
