Metro Vancouver is set to welcome an array of world leaders, celebrities, and affluent travellers arriving in private jets for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, commencing next month. Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), anticipates a substantial increase in the usual daily arrivals of private aircraft, which typically ranges from 15 to 25. However, he believes that this surge will not reach the dizzying heights of 181 private jets that landed on a single day during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.

A Steady Flow of Aircraft

The World Cup will see Vancouver host seven matches throughout June and July, leading to heightened activity at its airports. Margolis noted that while the influx of private jets will be significant, it is unlikely to parallel the extraordinary figures seen during the pop star’s concert series. “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I do not expect traffic levels around the match days to approach those of Taylor Swift,” he explained. “It’s all within our manageable capacity.”

Private jets arriving at YVR must reserve their landing times, coordinating with one of three specialised companies based at the airport, which provide luxury hangars and pilot lounges as part of their services. Margolis acknowledged the challenge of predicting the exact number of private flights, as many operators delay their bookings until closer to their arrival dates.

Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for Increased Demand

In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., is also bracing for an uptick in private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings, allowing for greater flexibility. Julia Rieberger, Administrative Manager at Alpha Aviation, the airport’s operator, mentioned that they are developing contingency plans to accommodate additional aircraft parking and are exploring options for helicopter transfers into Vancouver to help visitors avoid the 30-kilometre drive to BC Place Stadium.

Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for Increased Demand

“We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our services, including pricing and customs clearance,” Rieberger shared. “However, solid bookings are not expected until 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”

Typically, Boundary Bay sees only a handful of private planes each week, and like Margolis, Rieberger does not foresee a surge comparable to the Taylor Swift event.

Enhanced Coordination and Safety Measures

Nav Canada, which oversees air traffic services across the nation, has been preparing for the increased demand associated with this summer’s World Cup for over a year. Their proactive planning encompasses periods of heightened demand and major international events hosted in Canada. “Nav Canada has a proven track record of delivering safe and efficient services during major international events,” the organisation stated, citing past successes during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits.

Margolis confirmed that YVR has been engaged in strategic planning for the FIFA World Cup since 2022, ensuring a seamless experience for all passengers.

While private jet traffic is expected to rise, Margolis indicated that commercial flights would remain consistent, though the planes are likely to be fully booked. During the summer months, YVR typically serves around 80,000 passengers daily, with forecasts suggesting a modest increase of 5 to 10 per cent in passenger numbers attributed to FIFA-related travel.

Why it Matters

The FIFA World Cup represents not only a significant sporting event but also a potential economic boon for the region. The influx of private jets signifies a broader interest in Vancouver as a destination, elevating its international profile. As the city prepares to host visitors from around the globe, the operational readiness of its airports reflects a commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for all, ultimately contributing to the city’s reputation as a premier venue for international events.
