As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Metro Vancouver airports are gearing up for an influx of world leaders, celebrities, and the ultra-wealthy arriving in private jets. With the tournament kicking off next month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates a significant uptick in traffic, although it is unlikely to match the record levels seen during high-profile events, such as Taylor Swift’s recent concerts.
A Managed Increase in Air Traffic
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport, has indicated that while the typical daily arrivals of private aircraft range from 15 to 25, the World Cup will likely bring a notable increase. However, he cautions that this surge will not reach the extraordinary peak of 181 private planes recorded in a single day during Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.
Margolis explained, “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I do not expect the volume on the days surrounding the matches to approach what we saw for Taylor Swift. Our facilities are well equipped to handle the projected increase without difficulties.”
Coordination for Private Aircraft
For private aviation traffic, YVR requires advance booking of landing slots, utilising three specialised companies that manage these arrangements. These firms provide upscale amenities, such as luxury hangars and exclusive pilot lounges, to cater to high-profile visitors. Margolis noted, however, that predicting the exact number of private jets arriving for the World Cup is challenging, as many operators delay their booking until closer to their travel dates.
Meanwhile, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also preparing for a surge in private jets, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, which oversees Boundary Bay, mentioned that they are developing contingency plans for additional parking and exploring the option of helicopter transfers to facilitate access to Vancouver, particularly for those wishing to avoid the lengthy drive to BC Place Stadium.
“We’ve had numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our services and capabilities,” Rieberger stated. “However, solid bookings typically materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Commercial Flights Remain Steady
While Margolis does not foresee a comparable influx to that experienced during Swift’s concerts, he does anticipate a full house for commercial flights. Vancouver’s airports are generally bustling during the summer months, with an average of 80,000 passengers daily. The World Cup is expected to increase passenger traffic by an estimated 5 to 10 per cent on any given day, though this rise is considered manageable.
“While the number of commercial flights won’t increase, we expect these planes to be full with fans travelling specifically for FIFA-related activities,” Margolis explained.
Comprehensive Planning for Major Events
Nav Canada, responsible for air traffic services across the nation, has been preparing for the upcoming surge in demand for over a year. The organisation draws from its extensive experience managing air traffic during significant international events, including the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 and the G7 Summit in Charlevoix in 2018.
“Nav Canada is well-versed in delivering safe and efficient services during major international events,” a spokesperson confirmed. “Our planning incorporates lessons learned from past experiences and involves close coordination with airlines and airport authorities.”
Margolis further noted that a dedicated team at YVR has been strategising for the World Cup since 2022 to ensure a smooth experience for all travellers.
