In a significant development for Canadian coffee enthusiasts, Dunkin’ Donuts is making a comeback to Canada, driven by a growing demand for affordable food and beverage options. Foodtastic, a prominent player in Canada’s restaurant industry, has secured a master franchising agreement with Inspire Brands, the parent company of Dunkin’, to facilitate this expansion across the nation. The news was announced on Tuesday, with ambitious plans to establish hundreds of locations, starting with the first expected to open by late 2026 or early 2027.

Dunkin’s Return: A Strategic Move

The return of Dunkin’ comes at a time when coffee prices have surged approximately 31 per cent over the past few years, prompting consumers to seek budget-friendly alternatives. Under the new agreement, Foodtastic will hold exclusive rights to develop Dunkin’ outlets nationwide, both through corporate-owned and franchise-operated venues. This approach reflects a growing trend in the Canadian market, where affordability is increasingly becoming a priority for consumers.

Dunkin’ previously enjoyed popularity in Quebec during the 1990s but exited the Canadian landscape in 2018 due to declining sales. However, the current economic climate presents a fresh opportunity for the brand, as Canadians look for value amidst rising costs.

Ambitious Plans for Expansion

Peter Mammas, founder and CEO of Foodtastic, expressed confidence in the brand’s potential, projecting the establishment of between 600 and 700 Dunkin’ locations across Canada, with nearly 200 earmarked for Quebec alone. Mammas shared his optimism in an interview, stating, “In my opinion, within 12 months, we’ll be opening one Dunkin’ per week.” This rapid rollout is contingent upon securing suitable locations and franchise partners, a process that Mammas acknowledges may take some time.

Ambitious Plans for Expansion

The first Dunkin’ shop is set to be a milestone for the brand’s revival in Canada, and Mammas is resolute in his belief that the company can carve out a substantial market share in a competitive landscape.

While Dunkin’ faces competition from established Canadian favourite Tim Hortons, Mammas does not seem fazed. He believes that the cultural resonance of Tim Hortons is waning among younger consumers. “I think it’s getting old and young people don’t identify with Tim Hortons,” he remarked. He further suggested that Tim Hortons has “lost its way,” pointing to their diversifying menu, which now even includes pizza, as a sign of confusion regarding their brand identity.

Despite the competitive dynamics, Mammas is confident that Dunkin’ can differentiate itself, particularly through its diverse range of cold beverages that he anticipates will appeal to a younger demographic. The menu is expected to feature an array of items, including hot and iced coffees, espresso drinks, teas, donuts, sandwiches, and snacks, positioning Dunkin’ as a versatile option for consumers.

Broader Implications for the Food Industry

In addition to the Dunkin’ franchise, Foodtastic has established another partnership with Inspire Brands to introduce Jimmy John’s, a sandwich restaurant, to the Canadian market. This strategic move highlights Foodtastic’s ambition to diversify its offerings and cater to evolving consumer preferences.

Broader Implications for the Food Industry

Mammas implied that further collaborations with Inspire Brands could be on the horizon, hinting at the possibility of bringing additional popular franchises like Baskin-Robbins and Buffalo Wild Wings to Canada.

Why it Matters

The re-entry of Dunkin’ Donuts into the Canadian market signifies not only a revival of a beloved brand but also reflects broader economic trends that favour affordable dining options amid rising living costs. As consumers seek budget-friendly alternatives, the expansion of Dunkin’ may reshape the competitive landscape of the coffee and fast-food sectors in Canada. This move could also stimulate job creation and economic activity, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in navigating a challenging market environment.
