A recent adventure for two Calgary residents turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter when they spotted a family of grizzly bears along Highway 742, also known as the Smith-Dorrien Trail. Mujtaba Khawaja and his companion Rocco Rennie were en route to a hiking excursion in Kananaskis Country on May 7 when they chanced upon the bears, leading to a remarkable experience that they later shared widely, including a video that sparked conversations about wildlife behaviour.

A Memorable Moment in Nature

While driving along the scenic highway, Khawaja and Rennie noticed the bear family comprising a mother and three cubs meandering along the roadside. Instinctively, they pulled over to capture the moment on film. “We immediately stopped and I started filming the bear family,” Khawaja recounted. “It was a really cool moment — they walked past our car and went behind it while we continued recording.”

Their observations took an unexpected turn when one of the cubs stood on its hind legs and took a few steps, eliciting laughter and astonishment from the pair. “Very human-like. That took us by surprise, and we were just laughing,” Khawaja said, expressing that it was a first for him to witness such behaviour in the wild.

A Second Encounter with Nature

After their initial encounter, Khawaja and Rennie proceeded with their hike, unaware that they would soon see the same bears again. Following a five-hour trek, they spotted the bear family once more, this time under the guidance of conservation rangers. “We saw the same bears again, and they were being escorted by rangers,” Khawaja explained. The video captured during this second sighting shows the bears trotting past their vehicle, with a conservation officer’s truck trailing closely behind.

A Second Encounter with Nature

The Department of Forestry and Parks later confirmed familiarity with the bear family, stating that these bears are regularly observed in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. “It is common for conservation officers to escort bears along the road to ensure both visitor and wildlife safety,” the department noted, emphasising the importance of monitoring wildlife to prevent potential hazards for both animals and humans.

Addressing Misconceptions

Despite the enchanting nature of the footage, some viewers expressed doubt regarding its authenticity, suggesting it appeared to be computer-generated. Khawaja voiced his frustration at such claims, stating, “I got kind of defensive, you know, but a lot of people saw it as real footage.” He maintained that the majority of viewers believe in the genuineness of their experience, underscoring the importance of respecting wildlife encounters as authentic moments in nature.

Why it Matters

The encounter between Khawaja, Rennie, and the grizzly bear family highlights the profound connection that can exist between humans and wildlife, particularly in areas like Kananaskis Country, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. Such experiences not only foster appreciation for the natural world but also serve as a reminder of the need for responsible wildlife management. As human activities encroach upon natural habitats, ensuring the safety of both wildlife and the public becomes increasingly vital. This incident reinforces the importance of conservation efforts and the role that individuals play in protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
