A Son Remembered
Lewis’s father, Sean Waters, expressed his devastation in a heartfelt social media tribute, stating, “Words simply can’t describe the heartbreak and upset we’re going through.” He detailed how Lewis’s condition rapidly deteriorated, with sepsis developing just hours after he first showed signs of illness. Despite receiving intensive care, Lewis could not be saved.
Sean fondly remembered his son as “funny, sociable, and kind-hearted,” emphasising the deep love Lewis had for his sisters, friends, and family. “Life won’t be the same for many of us now that he’s gone,” he reflected, underscoring the profound impact Lewis had on those around him.

Lewis’s death comes amidst an alarming outbreak of meningitis in the Berkshire area, which has also affected two other school students in Reading. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the outbreak, assuring the community that close contacts of the infected individuals have been offered antibiotics as a precautionary measure.
The atmosphere at Henley College is one of mourning, with the institution expressing its deepest condolences to Lewis’s family. A statement from the college indicated, “Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the student’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.” They have pledged to support those impacted within their community while adhering to guidance from health authorities.
Health Authorities Respond
In light of the recent cases, Pete Thomas, headmaster of Reading Blue Coat School, confirmed that the school is collaborating closely with the UKHSA to ensure the safety and well-being of its students. He conveyed the school’s sorrow over the loss of a fellow student, adding, “We recognise that this is a concerning time for families and the wider community.”
The UKHSA has also clarified that the strain of meningitis involved in this outbreak differs from the variant that was linked to a separate outbreak in Kent earlier this year, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and prompted extensive vaccination efforts.

Meningitis symptoms can manifest rapidly and include high fever, severe headaches, vomiting, and a stiff neck, among others. Since 2015, the menB vaccine has been routinely administered to infants as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme. However, those born prior to this date remain vulnerable, raising concerns about the adequacy of existing vaccination strategies.
In response to the situation, Liberal Democrat MP for Henley and Thame, Freddie Van Mierlo, has urged the government to consider implementing a broader vaccination programme to better protect the community.
