Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has strongly criticised former US President Donald Trump for making false claims about the role of British troops in Afghanistan. In a video statement, Starmer described Trump’s remarks as “insulting” and called on the ex-president to retract his statements.

The controversy began when Trump, in a recent interview, alleged that British forces had “fled” Afghanistan, leaving American troops to handle the withdrawal. However, the facts clearly show that British personnel played a significant part in the evacuation efforts, working alongside their US counterparts to ensure the safe passage of civilians and military personnel.

Starmer, addressing the issue, stated: “The idea that British troops fled Afghanistan is simply wrong. Our servicemen and women conducted themselves with immense courage and professionalism throughout the withdrawal process, working tirelessly alongside their American allies to evacuate thousands of people.”

The Labour leader went on to highlight the sacrifices made by British troops during the 20-year conflict, noting that 457 UK personnel lost their lives in the line of duty. “For the former president to make such insulting and false claims is deeply disrespectful to the memory of those who paid the ultimate price,” Starmer said.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, the Ministry of Defence in the UK issued a statement reaffirming the significant contribution of British forces. “The UK military played a crucial role in the Afghanistan evacuation, working side by side with our US allies to help over 15,000 people to safety,” the statement read.

Political analysts have described Trump’s comments as a concerning attempt to rewrite the historical narrative surrounding the withdrawal from Afghanistan. They argue that the former president’s statements appear to be driven by a desire to shift blame away from the widely criticised US-led exit strategy.

Starmer, in his rebuke of Trump, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices and efforts of British troops. “Our armed forces deserve our utmost respect and gratitude, not baseless accusations from a former US president,” he said.

The Labour leader’s forceful response has been widely praised by both political allies and military veterans, who have commended him for standing up for the reputation of the UK’s armed forces.
