A 37-year-old white male resident of Minnesota was fatally shot by federal law enforcement officers in Minneapolis on Saturday morning, sparking outrage from local officials and community members.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, the victim was an “American citizen” and a “lawful gun owner” with a permit to carry the weapon. O’Hara stated that the man’s only previous interactions with law enforcement had been for traffic violations.
Footage of the incident appears to show multiple law enforcement officers struggling with the man on the ground before a gunshot is heard, followed by several more shots. The man then falls motionless.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly condemned the “political and partisan” narrative driving the immigration operation that led to the shooting. “How many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?” Frey said in a press conference. “How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realises that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values?”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released a statement claiming the armed suspect approached law enforcement officers, and that the officer who shot him “feared for his life.” However, O’Hara stated that details were still being established, as the police had only recently seen the video footage circulating online.
The shooting comes just over two weeks after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent during an altercation, and days after a Venezuelan man was shot in the leg while attempting to escape immigration officials.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty has asked members of the public to submit any video footage of the shooting directly to her office, as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension coordinates a state response to the incident.
The events have sparked outrage and protests in Minneapolis, with demonstrators setting fire to dumpsters and pushing them towards law enforcement. The situation remains tense as the community demands answers and accountability.
