As wildfires wreak havoc across northern Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz has taken decisive action by activating the National Guard to assist in combating the blazes. In response to the escalating wildfire threat, Governor Walz issued an executive order to deploy the National Guard following a request from the Department of Natural Resources. “Unpredictable and fast-moving wildfires are putting Minnesota communities at risk,” he stated. “This emergency declaration ensures we can fully mobilise the resources needed to protect lives, support evacuations, and help communities respond and recover.” The deployment will see Guard members providing critical staffing, equipment, and logistical support to firefighting efforts.
Major Fires and Their Impact
Two of the most pressing blazes currently affecting the region are the Stewart Trail fire near Two Harbors and the Flanders fire in Crow Wing County. The Stewart Trail fire has expanded to approximately 355 acres (145 hectares), while the Flanders fire is significantly larger at around 1,200 acres. Fire crews are facing daunting challenges as gusty winds fuel the flames and create new hazards.
As of Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Incident Command System (MNICS) reported that the Stewart Trail fire was 30% contained, offering a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing crisis. However, mandatory evacuations remain in place for residents and businesses northeast of Two Harbors, and State Highway 61 is closed between Two Harbors and Silver Bay due to the flames.
Lake County Sheriff Nathan Stadler provided updates on the situation, revealing that preliminary assessments indicated the destruction of 34 structures, including eight primary homes and 26 secondary buildings. “We know that this situation is stressful for residents and visitors, and our teams are working around the clock to keep people safe,” he emphasised during a news conference on Saturday. “The crews are doing the best they can to get this fire under control and ensure the area is safe for people to return to their properties.”
