The six detained Canadians include prominent grassroots activists, each with a commitment to advocacy and humanitarian efforts. They have been identified as Safa Chebbi from Montreal, Omar Shaban, an engineer and sustainable agriculture advocate from Toronto, Ko Tinmaung, an activist also from Toronto, Sebastian Tow, a community organiser based in Vancouver, Michael France, a boat technician from Vancouver, and Norrad Bouzide, a harm reduction worker from Toronto. Collectively, these individuals highlight the diverse backgrounds and dedication of the Canadian contingent involved in the flotilla.
In total, 12 Canadians participated in the mission, which included approximately 500 activists setting sail from Marmaris, Turkey, last week. The livestream abruptly ceased as Israeli forces boarded the vessels.
Reports indicate that within the initial three hours of the operation, at least 17 boats were intercepted, with additional footage showing Israeli forces instructing activists to gather at the front of their boats. The intercepts took place outside Cypriot territorial waters, and a Cypriot official, requesting anonymity, stated that Israel did not seek assistance from Cyprus during the operation. They further noted that Israeli authorities confirmed all individuals aboard were in good health.
