In a significant escalation of maritime tensions, six Canadians have been detained by Israeli forces following the interception of a flotilla aimed at breaching Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. This operation unfolded approximately 463 kilometres from Gaza’s shores, with the Global Sumud Flotilla confirming the detentions as part of a broader mission involving around 500 activists.

Details of the Interception

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which has been vocal about the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, reported that among the detained Canadians are Safa Chebbi, Omar Shaban, Ko Tinmaung, Sebastian Tow, Michael France, and Norrad Bouzide. These individuals represent a diverse array of backgrounds, from grassroots political organising to sustainable agriculture. Their mission, which commenced from Marmaris, Turkey, aimed to highlight the dire situation faced by Palestinians living in the besieged territory.

Shahid Mahmood, an activist aboard one of the vessels, conveyed to The Canadian Press that the detained Canadians had agreed to initiate a hunger strike in response to their capture. He also noted a troubling communication blackout regarding their detained compatriots.

A Call for Solidarity

Safa Chebbi, a spokesperson for the flotilla, emphasised that their hunger strike was not intended to garner sympathy but rather to shine a light on the prolonged suffering of Palestinians, who have faced confinement and violence amid widespread silence. “Our responsibility is to use every possible platform to break this silence and continue to place Palestine at the centre of this struggle,” Chebbi stated.

Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the request for comment but has yet to provide a detailed response, reflecting a cautious approach amidst escalating diplomatic tensions.

Israeli Military Action

In a marked departure from previous interceptions, which typically occurred under the cover of darkness, the Israeli military conducted this operation in broad daylight. Footage from the Global Sumud Flotilla’s livestream
