A powerful snowstorm has swept across the United States, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without electricity. The extreme weather has prompted emergency declarations in several states, with over 40% of the country under winter storm warnings.

The storm, which has brought heavy snow, ice and high winds, has led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, further disrupting travel and supply chains. Power companies are working around the clock to restore electricity to affected areas, but it may take days before full service is resumed.

According to data from PowerOutage.us, more than 200,000 customers were without power as of this morning, with the hardest-hit states being Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. Utility firms have warned that the outages could last for several days in some regions due to the severity of the weather conditions.

“This is a very dangerous situation, and we urge everyone to take it seriously,” said Sarah Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “Stay off the roads if possible, and be prepared for extended power cuts in the affected areas.”

Several states, including New York, Ohio and Wisconsin, have declared states of emergency, allowing them to access federal resources and coordinate relief efforts more effectively. Local authorities have opened emergency shelters and warming centres to provide refuge for those without heat or electricity.

“We’re seeing some of the worst winter weather in years,” said meteorologist Emily Thompson. “The combination of heavy snow, ice and strong winds is causing widespread disruption, and unfortunately, it’s not over yet.”

Forecasters predict the storm system will continue to move eastward over the next 24 hours, bringing additional snowfall and the risk of further power outages to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” said John Doe, the CEO of a major utility company. “We understand the inconvenience this is causing, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of our customers during this challenging time.”

As the clean-up and recovery efforts continue, experts warn that the economic impact of the storm could be significant, with disruptions to transportation, commerce and daily life. However, they emphasise that the priority remains ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected.
