The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified the recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern. This announcement comes as health authorities report at least 131 suspected fatalities and over 500 possible cases linked to the outbreak, which has spread undetected for several weeks.
The Emergence of a Rare Virus
Health professionals have identified the outbreak as being caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a lesser-known variant of the Ebola virus that currently lacks approved treatments or vaccines. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed significant concern regarding the extent and rapid transmission of the virus, particularly after cases were identified in urban settings and among healthcare workers. The emergency declaration marks a unique instance, as it is the first time a director-general has announced such a status before convening the emergency committee.
Dr. Ghebreyesus stated, “This is not a decision I took lightly,” emphasising the urgent need for an international response to the outbreak. He highlighted the importance of global health regulations in addressing such threats and acknowledged the role of WHO in coordinating efforts.
Current Situation and Response Efforts
Laboratory tests have confirmed 30 cases of Bundibugyo virus, including one American doctor, Peter Stafford, who developed symptoms while treating patients in Bunia, Uganda. He has since been evacuated to Germany for treatment. Stafford’s wife and three other colleagues who were in contact with him have not shown symptoms but remain under observation.
The outbreak was first officially recognised on May 5, following the death of an individual in Bunia. This case was linked to a funeral where unsafe burial practices were employed, allowing the virus to spread further. Health authorities are now engaging in contact tracing, isolation, and public education to prevent additional infections.
Dr. Anne Ancia from the WHO reported that the viral outbreak has already led to the deaths of several healthcare workers, further complicating containment efforts. “Our immediate priority is to halt the spread,” she asserted, underscoring the need for quick action in the face of limited medical countermeasures.
