The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached alarming proportions, with the number of suspected cases now exceeding 900. As health authorities grapple with a dire situation characterised by violence and severe resource constraints, the World Health Organization has categorised the outbreak as posing a “very high” risk for the nation, although it remains low for global transmission.
Rising Suspected Cases and Deaths
In a stark announcement, the Congolese Ministry of Communication confirmed that there are currently 904 suspected Ebola cases, alongside 119 suspected fatalities. This surge follows previous reports of over 700 suspected infections and approximately 170 deaths, predominantly concentrated in Ituri Province, the epicentre of the outbreak.
