The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is spiralling out of control, with health authorities unable to keep pace with the rising number of cases and mounting fatalities. As the World Health Organization (WHO) raises alarms, neighbouring nations are urged to bolster their defences against the spreading threat.
WHO Sounds the Alarm
In a stark warning delivered during an African Union meeting, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that the current Ebola outbreak has already claimed approximately 220 suspected lives. He stated, “We are urgently scaling up operations, but at the moment the epidemic is outpacing us.” Dr. Tedros is set to visit the DRC, accompanied by Chikwe Ihekweazu, head of WHO’s health emergencies programme, to assess the situation firsthand.
The urgency of the response is compounded by recent violent outbreaks in Ituri province, the epicentre of the epidemic. On two consecutive days over the weekend, health facilities in Mongbwalu faced violent assaults, crippling efforts to treat patients and contain the virus.
