As the Democratic Republic of the Congo grapples with a rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak, health authorities find themselves in a precarious battle against both the virus and a wave of community unrest. The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms, indicating that the outbreak is advancing faster than their response efforts, with neighbouring nations now at heightened risk.

WHO Issues Urgent Warning

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, painted a grim picture during an online conference with the African Union, revealing that the current outbreak has resulted in 220 suspected fatalities thus far. His comments came as he announced plans to visit the DRC later this week, accompanied by Chikwe Ihekweazu, head of the WHO’s health emergencies programme. Dr Tedros stressed, “We are urgently scaling up operations, but at the moment the epidemic is outpacing us,” urging immediate action from bordering countries to mitigate the spread.
