In a heartening turn of events, a 14-year-old girl from Toronto, who had been missing for nearly two weeks, has been located safely. Esther, who is on the autism spectrum, was discovered in a residence around 1 p.m. on Thursday, following an extensive search that captivated the community since she was reported missing from the Earl Bales Park area on May 15.
Discovery and Health Update
Authorities confirmed Esther was in “good physical health” at the time of her recovery and has since been taken to hospital for further assessment. Superintendent Don Belanger remarked on the ongoing investigation, noting that officials will now explore whether any criminal activity is linked to her disappearance.
Questions arose during the police news conference regarding the circumstances surrounding her discovery, particularly how law enforcement pinpointed the house where she was found. While Belanger acknowledged the meticulous video canvassing conducted by investigators, he refrained from providing specific details, leaving many inquiries unresolved.
The Search Effort
The community’s response to Esther’s disappearance was immediate and overwhelming. From the onset, officers, canine units, and local volunteers undertook a coordinated effort to scour the North York park area, utilising drones to search from above. Police later indicated that the last confirmed sighting of Esther occurred shortly after midnight on May 16, near Bathurst Street and Hotspur Road.

Last week, the search was escalated to a Level 1 operation—an uncommon designation, applied to just five out of nearly 3,100 missing person cases last year. Additionally, a tipline and dedicated website were established to aid the investigation. Jewish community organisations played a vital role, mobilising volunteers to assist in search parties for the girl, affectionately referred to as “Esti” by her loved ones.
Maureen Leshem, who acted as the family’s spokesperson, expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “Thousands of people came out to help from all walks of life, not just from our community, but from the entire community. We can breathe again.”
Family’s Response and Future Needs
In a statement released later on Thursday, Esther’s parents expressed immense relief at their daughter’s safe return, but also underscored the need for privacy as they focus on her recovery. “To be clear, while this is the end of the search, Esti still needs proper medical care, evaluation, and support. Our family is focused on making sure she is surrounded by the love and care she needs in the days ahead,” they explained.
They are grateful for her safe return but highlighted that the healing process will take time. They also urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the circumstances of her disappearance.
In the days leading up to her discovery, the family announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to Esther’s safe return, backed by anonymous donors. However, they faced challenges as posters seeking information about her were reportedly torn down in some areas, a situation that drew criticism from both police and community leaders.
Why it Matters
The successful recovery of Esther is a testament to community solidarity in times of crisis. It illustrates the power of collective action and the determination of individuals coming together to support one another. The search not only highlights the vulnerability of those with special needs but also reinforces the essential role of community networks in safeguarding their well-being. As Esther begins her path to recovery, it is crucial that society remains vigilant and compassionate toward those who may find themselves in similar situations, ensuring a supportive environment for all.
