In a troubling escalation of crime, over a dozen individuals in Peel Region have been arrested in connection with a series of extortion incidents targeting businesses within Brampton’s Punjabi community. Local leaders express deep concern that despite these arrests, threats may persist, leaving many feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods. Avi Dhaliwal, a long-time entrepreneur in Brampton, highlights the pervasive fear that has gripped the community, compelling some to relocate without updating their addresses out of fear for their safety.

Arrests Prompt Community Reflection

The Peel Regional Police announced the apprehension of 17 suspects in late May, following a thorough investigation into extortion activities that have predominantly affected South Asian business owners across Canada and the United States. The operation has resulted in more than 100 charges, including 75 firearm-related offences and several counts of arson and extortion.

Authorities have indicated that the majority of those arrested have links to an international criminal group known as For Brothers, which was first identified by the police in 2025. Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich remarked that this investigation represents a significant step in addressing the ongoing crisis, although he acknowledged that the fears within the community remain unaddressed. “I don’t see anything getting resolved … because people are still under threat,” said Mr. Dhaliwal, reflecting the widespread anxiety felt among residents.

Community Leaders Speak Out

Balpreet Singh, legal counsel for the World Sikh Organization of Canada, emphasised that extortion is a significant issue specifically impacting the Punjabi community, pointing out that lumping it into a broader ‘South Asian problem’ diminishes the unique challenges faced by this group. Binder Singh, another community leader, corroborated these sentiments, stating that many victims are contemplating leaving Canada due to safety concerns. “It’s the broken dream right now. We came to Canada for safety, security and prosperity,” he lamented.

Community Leaders Speak Out

The situation is further complicated by perceptions surrounding immigration policies. Some community members argue that lax regulations have contributed to the influx of individuals engaging in criminal activities. In response to these concerns, Jeffrey MacDonald, a communications advisor with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, stated that the agency collaborates with various partners to conduct thorough security screenings for those seeking entry into Canada.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Concerns

While the Peel Regional Police continue to investigate the links between the For Brothers group and other criminal entities, there are apprehensions regarding potential foreign interference, particularly from the infamous Lawrence Bishnoi Gang, based in India. Milinovich noted that while there have been references made to this gang during the delivery of threats, conclusive connections have yet to be established. “Our community is very familiar with that particular name. It carries some anxiety. It carries fear,” he explained, acknowledging the depth of concern felt within the Punjabi community.

Despite the arrests, the fear of extortion and violence remains palpable. Community leaders are urging authorities to take further action to ensure the safety of residents, who feel increasingly isolated and vulnerable.

Why it Matters

The challenges faced by Brampton’s Punjabi community underscore a broader issue of safety and security in Canada, particularly for immigrant populations who seek stability and peace. As extortion threats continue to loom, it is crucial for law enforcement and community organisations to collaborate effectively to restore trust and ensure the wellbeing of all residents. Addressing the root causes of such criminal activities is essential not only for the affected individuals but also for the integrity and safety of the wider community. The ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that can arise in immigrant communities and the need for comprehensive strategies to combat these issues effectively.
