In a marked escalation of hostilities, Israel launched air strikes in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, despite a fragile ceasefire agreement with the Iran-aligned militant group Hezbollah. The strikes targeted areas near the Jabal Amel hospital in Tyre, leading to significant civilian casualties and damage to medical facilities. This situation unfolds against a backdrop of complex international negotiations aimed at stabilising the region amidst ongoing warfare involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Israeli Air Strikes and Civilian Casualties

The Israeli military’s actions on Tuesday resulted in the death of four individuals and left 127 injured, including 39 hospital staff members, following a series of air raids near the Jabal Amel hospital. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of devastation, with debris and damaged vehicles strewn across the area as local residents grappled with the aftermath. One distraught woman, standing amidst the ruins of her former home, poignantly remarked, “I live there… used to.”

Dr Wael Mroueh, the hospital’s director, detailed the chaos that ensued. “We were working with patients and displaced people. Business was as usual, and suddenly, ‘boom’,” he recounted, emphasising the lack of prior warning. He asserted that there were no military targets in proximity, condemning the strikes as indiscriminate aggression against civilians and medical personnel.
