A remarkable reunion is set to unfold in Windsor, Ontario, as Connor Russette prepares to welcome back his beloved ball python, Peanut, who had gone missing for over a month. The Disappearance
Peanut vanished from Russette’s home around May 13, shortly after being fed the previous evening. “I looked up and the first thing I noticed was the empty enclosure,” Russette recounted. Despite an exhaustive search throughout his home, there was no sign of the snake. The owner speculated that Peanut may have accidentally slipped into the toilet, leading to concerns about her survival if she indeed made her way into the plumbing.
“I was genuinely worried that if she went down the pipes, she might not make it,” he admitted. Fortunately, fate intervened, and after a week of uncertainty, Peanut was located.

The ball python was found on May 22, nestled in a collection bin at the Little River Pollution Control Plant. Jeff Miller, the plant’s chief operator, was the one to retrieve Peanut, who was subsequently handed over to the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society. The organisation shared the news on social media, sparking hope for Russette, who was eager to see if his beloved pet had been found.
Ed Valdez, the executive director of pollution control for the City of Windsor, noted that while snakes occasionally end up in the sewage system, it is exceedingly rare for them to survive such an ordeal. “For an animal to be found alive in the system is an extreme, rare occasion,” he stated, emphasising the unusual nature of this rescue.
The Reunion
When Russette learned of the humane society’s post, he quickly reached out and made the journey to verify if Peanut had indeed been found. “As soon as I walked in and saw her head, I knew right away—yep, that’s Peanut,” he exclaimed. The humane society, which aims to reunite lost pets with their owners whenever possible, confirmed that Russette was Peanut’s rightful owner. Lynnette Bain, the organisation’s executive director, remarked on the snake’s sociable nature, suggesting she was clearly a cherished pet.

With the reunion set for Wednesday afternoon, Russette is eager to take Peanut home. However, the snake will need a veterinary examination to assess her health following her unexpected time away. “She looks a bit rough and has some cuts, but it’s nothing too serious,” he added optimistically. Before her disappearance, Peanut accompanied Russette to various events, including car shows, and he plans to resume these adventures once she is back to full health.
“Now that I have my snake back, we can get back to exploring together,” he said, filled with excitement for the summer ahead.
