The Royal Navy has confirmed the identities of three crew members who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a training exercise near Okehampton, Devon. Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, 42, Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, and Petty Officer Owen Green, 24, were involved in the incident that occurred early Wednesday morning, and their families have since paid heartfelt tributes to their memories.
Remembering the Fallen Crew
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has identified the deceased as accomplished members of the Commando Helicopter Force stationed at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. All three were highly regarded within the military community. Lt Cdr Gayson, described as an exceptionally kind family man, was noted for his dedication to his work and commitment to training future pilots. His family expressed their sorrow, saying, “He was passionate about and dedicated to his job in the Royal Navy.”
Lt Lily-Mae Fisher was recognised as the UK’s only female Royal Navy commando, and was on the brink of receiving her Pilot’s Wings in June. Her family expressed immense pride in her achievements, noting, “To say she was full of life is an understatement.” Fisher had previously represented England in various sports and was a notable figure in the military, displaying exceptional resilience and leadership.
Petty Officer Owen Green joined the Royal Navy in 2022 and quickly made his mark, achieving his Aircrewman Wings by June 2025. His family shared their devastation over his untimely death, reflecting on his warmth, kindness, and the joy he brought to those around him. “Losing Owen has left us all devastated… He achieved his life’s goal to serve in the Royal Navy,” they stated.

The crash occurred around 03:45 BST on Wednesday, while the crew were conducting a training mission aboard a Merlin Mk4 helicopter. He remarked, “They will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with the families and all those affected.”
