In a harrowing case that has shocked the nation, Emma Barnett, 36, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her one-year-old son, Oakley. Barnett administered a deadly mix of prescription medications in his milk, tragically taking his life just days before a court was set to remove him from her care.

Barnett’s case came to light during a family court hearing on 8 November 2024, which ruled that her son should be taken away from her due to concerns for his welfare. Prior to this hearing, Barnett made a series of alarming choices. She drove to Epping Forest, allegedly to meet a friend, but actually collected prescribed medications intended to sedate her child.
Once back at her home in Debden, Essex, she added the antihistamine promethazine and the antidepressant mirtazapine to Oakley’s milk, endangering his health in a premeditated act. Judge Derek Sweeting, presiding over the case, highlighted the disturbing nature of her actions, noting her deliberate planning to conceal her whereabouts from social services.

A search operation was launched, including police helicopters and dogs, after Barnett’s car was located in Epping Forest.
