In a harrowing case that has shocked the nation, Emma Barnett has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her infant son, Oakley. The 36-year-old mother poisoned the one-year-old with a deadly concoction of prescription medications, administered through his baby bottles, just days before a court was set to remove him from her care. The case highlights the tragic intersection of mental health struggles and parental responsibility.
A Disturbing Precedent
Barnett’s actions unfolded against a backdrop of escalating desperation. Following a family court ruling on 8 November 2024, which mandated that Oakley be taken into protective custody, Barnett plotted his death. Mr Justice Derek Sweeting, presiding over the case at Cambridge Crown Court, recounted how Barnett had arranged to attend the court hearing remotely. However, rather than comply, she embarked on a chilling course of action.
In a calculated move, Barnett drove to Epping Forest, ostensibly to create an alibi. During this trip, she procured medications prescribed to her, including the sedative promethazine and the antidepressant mirtazapine, which she then mixed into Oakley’s milk and juice. The judge described how Barnett attempted to mislead authorities by creating a false narrative about her whereabouts, while, in reality, she remained hidden in her loft with her son.
The Night of Tragedy
The situation took a dark turn as the evening progressed. After failing to locate Barnett and Oakley, social workers and police initiated a search, prompted by growing concerns for their welfare. Barnett’s vehicle was discovered in Epping Forest, triggering a large-scale operation involving helicopters and police dogs.
At approximately midnight on 9 November, officers were alerted by the sound of a baby crying emanating from the loft of Barnett’s home. When approached, Barnett reportedly confessed, stating, “I killed him.” Upon forcing entry, authorities found Oakley unresponsive, and Barnett was discovered attempting to take her own life. Tragically, Oakley succumbed to his injuries on 31 December 2024, leaving a community in mourning.
Sentencing and Implications
In a poignant sentencing, Mr Justice Sweeting condemned Barnett’s actions as the deliberate killing of a vulnerable child who relied entirely on her for care. He imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years, remarking on the chilling premeditation involved. “This was the killing of a very young and vulnerable child wholly dependent on you brought about by your deliberate actions,” he stated.
Barnett’s defence counsel, Jonathan Higgs KC, noted her struggle with a recognised mental health disorder and the fact that her five older children had previously been removed from her custody due to her inability to care for them. Despite this, the judge expressed that Barnett’s mental health issues could not excuse such a heinous crime, suggesting that her actions stem
