In a bold move that has escalated tensions further in the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has executed what Russian officials are labelling an “unprecedented attack” on and around St Petersburg. This operation coincided with the final day of Russia’s prominent economic forum, which aims to attract international investment. More than 140 Ukrainian drones were reportedly intercepted over the Leningrad region, as local authorities urged residents to remain indoors for the first time since the war began over four years ago.
Drone Strikes Target Key Military Installations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared footage on social media purportedly showing the drone strikes impacting various military targets. He asserted that these strikes were a justified response to continuous Russian aggression, specifically citing hits on Russian arsenals and a naval base in Kronstadt. Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko of Leningrad reported that a fire erupted at a military facility as a result of these strikes, necessitating the evacuation of nearby residents. The drone strikes come on the heels of President Vladimir Putin’s remarks at the economic forum, where he dismissed Zelensky’s calls for direct negotiations to bring an end to the conflict. Putin reiterated that any ceasefire would merely allow Ukraine to regroup and that he would only consider concluding the war once Russia’s objectives had been achieved. These objectives include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from regions such as Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, which have been largely occupied by Russian troops.
