The celebration of 250 years of American independence further strengthens our connection, acting as a bridge between our shared past and promising future.”

McEwan expressed her excitement about the recognition her design has garnered, admitting that winning the competition felt surreal. “When I first read the email, I genuinely thought it must have been sent to everyone and I’d misunderstood it,” she shared. “It took a few reads for it to sink in that I’d actually won. Creating this tartan was about telling a story, with each thread and colour representing moments leading up to the Declaration of Independence, from the 13 colonies to significant dates like the 4th of July.”
Her design reflects an understanding of the importance of storytelling through craftsmanship, and she has poured her heart into researching and developing a piece that resonates on both a personal and historical level. “Bringing that narrative to life through weaving has been an exciting creative challenge,” she added, noting her gratitude for the support she received throughout her studies.
