Transport Canada has announced a significant recall affecting more than 400,000 vehicles from Ford and Hyundai due to serious safety concerns, including risks of crashes and fires. The recalls stem from multiple manufacturing defects, prompting urgent action for vehicle owners.

Details of the Ford Recall

The recall primarily focuses on certain models of the Ford Bronco, particularly the 2021 and 2022 versions. Initially issued in May and updated on June 3, the recall addresses structural integrity issues with the hard top-roof panels. These panels may not have been produced to the necessary standards, increasing the risk of detachment while the vehicle is in motion, which could lead to accidents. Approximately 1,100 Ford Bronco owners will receive notifications by mail, instructing them to visit their local dealership for an inspection and potential replacement of the hard top.

In addition to the Bronco, Transport Canada has identified a short-circuit risk associated with engine block heaters in several other models. A total of 138,783 vehicles are implicated, including the 2021-2024 Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport, 2020-2022 Ford Escape, 2016-2024 Ford Explorer, 2016-2018 Ford Focus, 2022-2023 Ford Maverick, and 2019-2024 Ranger. The recall also affects Lincoln Corsair and MKC models. Owners are advised to refrain from using the engine block heater until the necessary repairs are completed. Those affected will also be contacted regarding options to replace or permanently disable the block heater.

This recall supersedes a previous one issued in 2025; vehicles that underwent repairs in the earlier recall will not require additional service.

Hyundai’s Safety Concerns

Hyundai has also been swept into the recall wave, with over 6,000 Elantras from the 2024 to 2026 model years flagged for issues related to the hybrid power control unit. This component may overheat, potentially causing the vehicle to fail to start or to enter a reduced power mode. Furthermore, the overheating poses a fire hazard. Affected owners will receive written notifications from Hyundai, advising them to visit a dealership for software updates to the hybrid power control unit.

In another recall affecting more than 80,000 vehicles, the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and 2025-2026 Tucson models are being recalled due to a software issue with the front camera. This glitch can erroneously trigger the forward collision avoidance system to brake suddenly, creating an increased risk of accidents. Hyundai will reach out to owners via mail to facilitate the necessary software updates.

Importance of Timely Repairs

These recalls underscore the critical importance of vehicle safety and the need for prompt attention to manufacturer communications. Owners of affected vehicles are urged to take these recalls seriously and to act swiftly to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.

Why it Matters

The scale of these recalls highlights a growing concern regarding vehicle safety standards and the need for manufacturers to maintain rigorous quality control measures. As more vehicles are on the road, ensuring that they operate safely is paramount for public safety. This situation serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about vehicle recalls and to prioritise repairs that can prevent potential hazards. The implications extend beyond individual safety; they reflect broader systemic issues within the automotive industry that demand ongoing scrutiny and accountability.
