As the FIFA World Cup draws near, Canada Post has announced potential “minor service interruptions” in Vancouver and Toronto, coinciding with the tournament’s schedule from June 11 to July 19. With the matches expected to attract large crowds, the national postal service is taking proactive measures to ensure mail delivery remains as smooth as possible in the affected areas.
Service Interruptions in Toronto
In Toronto, Canada Post has identified specific postal codes—M6K, M6J, and M5V—that may experience delays or interruptions due to their proximity to key event venues. Notably, Toronto Stadium at Exhibition Place will host six matches, including Canada’s inaugural game on June 12. To mitigate disruptions, any undelivered mail will be securely held at the Canada Post depot and prioritised for delivery on the next business day.
Additionally, selected post offices in the city, namely those located at 390 Queens Quay W., 761 King St. W., 119 Ossington Ave., and 1093 Queen St. W., may face temporary delays in processing and delivering mail on certain match days. Canada Post has advised that street letter boxes within the event zones will be removed until July 22, with customers encouraged to utilise the post office at 1093 Queen St. W. for their mailing needs. Notably, no pickups will occur near the FIFA Fan Festival or Toronto Stadium on match days.
The six matches hosted in Toronto are scheduled for June 12, June 17, June 20, June 23, June 26, and July 2, coinciding with a significant influx of soccer fans and heightened activity in the area.
Vancouver’s Unique Challenges
Canada Post anticipates different levels of disruption in Vancouver, where it plans to clear and seal multiple mailboxes leading up to all match days, including weekend fixtures. The fan festival and stadium, located at BC Place, will feature seven matches between June 13 and July 7, necessitating these additional precautions. Mailboxes will reopen the following business day for customers to deposit their mail.
However, Canada Post reassured residents in the region with postal codes beginning with V6A, V6B, and V6Z that they should not expect any service interruptions for regular mail deliveries. Furthermore, commercial customers in the vicinity of the event locations will continue to receive uninterrupted service.
The three post offices located at 238 Robson St., 1173 – 88 West Pender St., and 495 West Georgia St. will maintain their regular operations throughout the tournament.
