Serious allegations of racism, antisemitism, and Islamophobia have emerged within Mitie, a key contractor for the Home Office, prompting an urgent investigation. Whistleblowers have come forward with disturbing claims that some employees at immigration removal centres have engaged in hate speech and made offensive comments both at work and online. This troubling situation raises significant concerns about the workplace culture within facilities responsible for handling vulnerable migrants.

A Culture of Discrimination?

The allegations, which have been compiled into a detailed dossier sent to Mitie’s management, paint a grim picture of the environment within the company’s immigration centres. Whistleblowers have reported instances of staff making derogatory remarks about immigrants, including one who allegedly declared that immigrants “should be kicked out of our country.” Another shocking claim involves a staff member stating, “All Muslim men beat their wives,” demonstrating a stark lack of sensitivity and understanding.

Further compounding these serious issues, some employees reportedly expressed support for far-right ideologies on social media. One staff member allegedly liked a post from a known far-right activist, while others engaged with posts that used vile language against various communities. The prevalence of such attitudes raises alarm bells about the safety and dignity of both staff and detainees.

Responses from Mitie and the Home Office

Mitie has stated that it is taking these allegations seriously and is currently conducting a thorough investigation. A spokesperson emphasised that there is “no place for racism or discrimination” within their operations. However, the company’s history raises questions about the effectiveness of its previous responses. In 2022, the chief executive had to apologise to the Home Secretary after racist WhatsApp messages circulated among staff. Additionally, an employment tribunal had previously expressed concern over derogatory terms used by staff to describe their colleagues.

The Home Office, while acknowledging the allegations, has deferred responsibility to Mitie, stating that the matter falls within the contractor’s purview. This raises further questions about oversight and accountability in the treatment of both employees and migrants at these facilities.

Whistleblowers Speak Out

One whistleblower, representing the Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) community, expressed deep distress over the hostile work environment. They stated, “I suffer severe stress, anxiety and fear coming to work. I no longer feel safe, valued or protected.” Their plea for a rigorous investigation highlights the urgent need for change and better protections for vulnerable populations within the immigration system.
