A significant investigation into a series of auto thefts in southwestern Ontario has led to five individuals facing a total of 74 charges. The operation, named Project Steel, commenced in March after a vehicle was stolen from a Milton residence. Crucially, the victim’s wallet was left inside the vehicle, and bank cards from the wallet were later used at a fast-food establishment in the Greater Toronto Area.
Investigation Unfolds
Detectives quickly identified multiple victims linked to these incidents and traced the suspects to a home in Brampton. On April 1, Halton police executed a search warrant at the location, resulting in the arrest of four suspects. During the raid, officers confiscated a range of items including fraudulent identification from Ontario and Quebec, vehicle reprogramming equipment, magnetic trackers, mobile phones, blank key fobs, burglary tools, clothing worn during the thefts, and unlawfully obtained medications.
A fifth suspect was apprehended on June 2, bringing the total number of arrests to five. Notably, four of those arrested hail from Quebec, while one is from Ontario. Authorities are still searching for a sixth suspect from Quebec, who faces 25 charges related to the thefts.
Criminal Network Exposed
The investigation has revealed that this group is believed to be responsible for at least 13 auto thefts and attempted thefts in Halton Region, in addition to one incident in Waterloo Region. The charges against the five arrested individuals range from theft of a motor vehicle to identity fraud and the unauthorised use of credit cards.
“Organised auto theft is a crime that impacts our community on multiple levels and remains a priority issue for our police service,” stated Sergeant Kevin Magee in a recent media release. He emphasised that initiatives like Project Steel reflect their commitment to dismantling these criminal networks and safeguarding the community. “We will continue to leverage every available resource to disrupt criminal activity, identify those responsible, and ensure they are held accountable before the courts,” he added.
