Recent studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used for weight management and Type 2 diabetes, may also lower the risk of developing certain cancers. This emerging evidence coincides with the increasing availability of semaglutide, a popular GLP-1 drug, and the introduction of generic versions in Canadian pharmacies this year. The findings, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago, highlight a significant opportunity for both cancer prevention and improved patient outcomes.
Promising Findings from Large-Scale Studies
Among the notable studies shared at the ASCO meeting was a comprehensive analysis involving over 161,000 patients, primarily aged 47, who were classified as obese but had not been diagnosed with obesity-related cancers. Half of these participants received GLP-1 injections, while the other half were guided on diet and exercise. Over a two-year follow-up, those using GLP-1 medications experienced a remarkable 41 per cent reduction in the incidence of obesity-related cancers compared to those receiving lifestyle consultations.
Dr. Judith Bray, Vice-President of Research at the Canadian Cancer Society, expressed her enthusiasm for the implications of this research. “This has the potential to be transformative,” she stated, noting that the scientific community has begun to pay closer attention to the possible links between GLP-1 drugs and cancer prevention.

However, Dr. Bray pointed out that the possibility of these drugs contributing to cancer prevention was largely overlooked until recent accidental findings indicated a correlation. Further studies are crucial to explore whether GLP-1 medications can also aid in preventing cancer recurrence. “If someone has already had cancer and is prescribed these drugs, could it delay or prevent metastasis?” Dr. Bray queried, emphasizing the need for more focused research in this area.
Insights into Breast Cancer Risk
In a separate study published in the JCO Oncology Practice, researchers found a noteworthy association between GLP-1 treatment and a decreased incidence of breast cancer. This study examined over 110,000 patients aged 45 to 80 who underwent breast imaging between January 2022 and June 2025. Of these, nearly 14 per cent had been prescribed GLP-1 medications. Results indicated that women on these drugs faced up to a 35 per cent lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to their counterparts not using GLP-1s.
Lead researcher Dr. Elizabeth McDonald acknowledged that while the study is observational and does not definitively establish causation, it adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting GLP-1 drugs warrant further investigation as potential tools for cancer prevention.

With breast cancer anticipated to become the most diagnosed cancer among women in Canada by 2026, the implications of these findings are significant. Kimberly Carson, CEO of Breast Cancer Canada, described the research as “very encouraging” and expressed her hope for future advancements in this field. She highlighted the necessity for more Canadian-focused studies to corroborate these findings and harness the potential of GLP-1 medications in cancer prevention.
Carson believes that Canada possesses the infrastructure and expertise to conduct such studies, stating, “There’s an opportunity for Canada to contribute valuable data in this area.”
