In a poignant intersection of artistry and affection, photographer Tony Hertz has immortalised his cherished moments with his late dog, Lolly, through a striking image taken on his iPhone 7 Plus. The photograph, a part of Hertz’s ongoing exploration of shadows, encapsulates the deep bond he shared with his furry companion, who passed away in November.

A Canine Companion

Lolly, a delightful mix of chow-chow and cocker spaniel, was a constant presence in Hertz’s life for 15 years. Describing her as “quite cute,” Hertz fondly recalls her long, black fur accented with white patches on her mouth, ears, eyebrows, and feet, along with her unique marbled tongue. Their relationship was not merely that of owner and pet; Lolly was a loyal partner, often by Hertz’s side on his artistic endeavours.

Capturing the Shadow of Love

The image that has garnered attention was captured during one of their sunset strolls in Pismo Beach, California. At the time, Hertz was engrossed in a photographic series centred on the theme of shadows. As he took a moment to rest on a bench, he observed their shadows cast against the ground, with Lolly gazing up at him. “I positioned my phone so it couldn’t be seen in the shadow, composed the shot and then looked toward Lolly so that our profiles would be turned to each other,” he explained. This careful composition not only highlights his technical prowess but also his emotional connection to the moment.

Hertz has had an illustrious three-decade career, photographing notable figures including monarchs and political leaders. However, this photograph stands out as a deeply personal attempt, capturing not just a likeness but a memory imbued with love and companionship.

The Void Left Behind

Lolly’s death from chronic kidney failure has left a significant emotional void in Hertz’s life. “There’s a void in my home now,” he reflects. “Though she lived a good long life, I still miss her very much.” The photograph serves as a bittersweet reminder of their time together, encapsulating the affection and joy they shared. “The photo reminds me of the love I felt for my faithful companion. She often shadowed me,” Hertz states, revealing the profound impact Lolly had on his life.

Why it Matters

Hertz’s evocative portrait is more than just a photograph; it is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and their pets. In a world often preoccupied with technology and fleeting moments, this image serves as a reminder of the love that quietly shapes our lives. It underscores the importance of cherishing those we hold dear, reflecting on the memories that continue to resonate long after they are gone. In capturing a shadow, Hertz has illuminated the lasting imprint of love and companionship, reminding us all of the beauty and fragility of life.
