As the FIFA World Cup unfolds in Toronto, the city is experiencing a vibrant influx of international fans, yet the anticipated economic windfall remains uncertain. With thousands flocking to the Canadian metropolis for its inaugural men’s World Cup matches, local businesses are eagerly assessing whether the excitement translates into the promised financial benefits.

A City Abuzz with Energy

The atmosphere in Toronto is electric, with fan zones, sports bars, and outdoor patios brimming with supporters from around the globe. “The energy in the city is phenomenal,” enthused Sara Anghel, president and CEO of the Greater Toronto Hotel Association. The palpable excitement is evident as fans engage in celebrations across the downtown area, creating a lively backdrop for the tournament.

However, despite the visible crowds, many hotels in the region are not experiencing the surge in occupancy that was initially anticipated. “June has been uneven for us,” Anghel noted, pointing out that the current occupancy levels are tracking below those of the previous year. The CEO estimates that hotels could finish the month at around 65 per cent occupancy. She explained, “June is typically a busy month in Toronto, but this year, many potential visitors seem to have opted out, leading to a quieter atmosphere than usual for a World Cup month.”

Mixed Fortunes for Local Businesses

While hotel occupancy rates may not reflect the excitement on the streets, some local businesses are already reaping the rewards of the tournament. Restaurant manager Callam Hald shared that his establishment saw a long queue of eager patrons even before a match began. “We had a lineup this morning and the game wasn’t until 3,” he remarked, highlighting the growing demand for dining options as fans gather to enjoy the festivities.

Anghel further amplified this sentiment, stating that restaurants, patios, and hotel gathering spaces are seeing a noticeable uptick in foot traffic. “Yesterday afternoon, the area from the convention centre to Front Street was bustling with people enjoying the sun at patios and lobbies, like the Royal York,” she said, illustrating how the tournament is stimulating local commerce.

Optimism for the Future

Amidst the mixed results, Anghel remains hopeful about the upcoming months. “May was strong, and we expect July and August to perform very well,” she said, reflecting an optimistic outlook for the summer ahead. The city is set to host five group stage matches and one knockout game between June 12 and July 2, contributing to further opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Andrew Weir, CEO of Destination Toronto, previously expressed a similar sentiment, suggesting that even if June’s figures fall short of expectations, the remainder of the summer is likely to balance out the overall economic impact.

The Global Spotlight on Toronto

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow emphasised the importance of the World Cup in elevating the city’s global profile. “The entire world has their eyes on Toronto,” she declared, reinforcing that the tournament not only showcases the city but also presents a significant opportunity for economic growth.

Yet, the ultimate financial impact of the World Cup will become clearer only after the final whistle. For now, while the tournament has undoubtedly generated excitement and brought significant crowds to the city, the extent to which it will fulfil the economic promises made by organisers and government remains to be seen.

Why it Matters

The World Cup serves as a critical test for Toronto’s economy, with potential long-term implications for local businesses and tourism. The event is not only a showcase of athletic prowess but also an opportunity for the city to enhance its international reputation. As Toronto navigates the complexities of hosting such a prestigious tournament, the hope is that the current excitement will translate into enduring economic benefits, fostering a vibrant community that thrives on global engagement.
